A recent Reuters report, Medicare Patients: Beware of ‘observation status’ in hospitals, outlines the dangers of hospital status to Medicare patients.  Hospitals are under pressure to avoid re-admission of Medicare patients, causing an increase in patients being given “observation” status rather than “inpatient” status.   The danger?  Observation status means the patient could be forced to pay thousands of dollars in medical bills that would be covered if he/she was given inpatient status.
